I was deeply saddened by the news of Mario Pacheco s death last week to cancer. Mario founded and ran the pioneering Flamenco label Nuevos Medios a label that helped reshaped traditional flamenco into a dynamic modern scene, with artists such as Ketama, Pata Negra and Rafael Requini. Nuevos Medios was also a key Spanish distributor with labels such as ECM, Rough Trade and World Circuit. I got to know Mario as a label - Nuevos Medios plays a key part in all the Flamenco Rough Guides - and also as our Spanish distributor for many years. His relaxed manner, warmth and humour always made our meetings a pleasure. Mario spent much of his time in the studio and was dedicated to the music he loved.
